Yeah, you read right. The rich would rather help themselves than their next door neighbor.

At least that’s what Steve Siebold discovered when he was writing his book, “How Rich People Think.” Siebold traveled all over the world for almost 30 years to figure out what made wealthy folks tick. "The rich go out there and try to make themselves happy. They don't try to pretend to save the world," Siebold told Business Insider.

Is it wrong to take care of yourself before trying to help other people? Many would say yes. And it is precisely that attitude that is keeping them poor. Heck, even on airplanes they tell you to "put the oxygen mask on yourself first before helping other." If you didn’t, you could die and then help no one!

"If you're not taking care of you, you're not in a position to help anyone else. You can't give what you don't have."

Rather than working in a soup kitchen, ladling out chicken noodle to the homeless, wouldn’t it be great if you could fund a school to help re-educate and re-train people who lost everything in the recession? Wouldn’t it be great to buy up some foreclosed homes and offer them back to the owners at discounted rent?

Of course it would. But it’s just not possible without money. That guy serving soup might think he’s getting Brownie points in heaven, but is he really making a difference or is he just another enabler of the status quo?

Harsh? Maybe. But maybe it’s time that we all stood up and declared that money is not our enemy. Money is not the Root Of All Evil. Maybe someone thought up that saying to keep poor people poor.

Money can make lives better. Money can make the world better. Approach it correctly, earn it, use it well!
